Janice Bassil
Ms. Bassil is a trial attorney concentrating in the areas of family law and criminal law. After graduating from Boston University Law School in 1978, Ms. Bassil worked for six years at the Massachusetts Defender’s Committee.
She went on to work at White, Inker and Aronson for four years, concentrating on family law and criminal law. Ms. Bassil developed a special expertise in cases concerning sexual abuse and domestic violence allegations during divorce and the relationship between criminal and civil cases in this area. She has lectured at many seminars on this subject and is coauthor of the chapter “Issues Pertaining to the Complainant at Trial” in the Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education treatise Trying Sex Offense Cases in Massachusetts. In addition, Ms. Bassil is a former president of the Massachusetts Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
In 1989, Ms. Bassil joined with J. W. Carney, Jr. to form the law firm of Carney & Bassil. Because of Ms. Bassil’s background in trial work, her philosophy is that many probate cases can and should be worked out by agreement, but if one party is unwilling to negotiate then she will take the matter to Court without hesitation.
Ms. Bassil continues to try family law and criminal cases in all courts throughout Massachusetts including the United States District Court of Massachusetts. Because of her hard work and commitment to clients, Ms. Bassil received the Edward J. Duggan Private Counsel Award for the Committee for Public Counsel Services in 1997 for zealous advocacy and outstanding representation of the indigent. In 1998, she was awarded the Award of Excellence by the Frank J. Murray Inns of Court for making a significant contribution to the development of the law and for most exemplifying the ideals of civility, ethics and professional competence. She has been rated A-V, the highest rating in ability and integrity by the nationally respected Martindale Hubbell legal directory.
Ms. Bassil understands that lawsuits, including divorce, custody, and criminal issues, are a difficult and emotionally stressful time for everyone involved. The decisions that are made in these situations will affect a person and his or her family for the rest of their lives. Ms. Bassil strives to decrease the emotional and financial strain of divorce, custody, support, and criminal cases in several ways. She will at all times strive to get a fair result. Ms. Bassil is a tough and experienced advocate who won’t back down.
